The Hormone Conversation We’re Not Having: Why Andropause Stays in the Shadows
We talk about hot flashes, brain fog, and night sweats. We share hormone replacement protocols and commiserate over disappearing sleep. But where’s the parallel conversation about the men in our lives going through their own hormonal revolution?
Andropause is real. So why the silence?
While perimenopause finally gets its moment (thank you, celebrities and brave storytellers), andropause remains the elephant in every relationship. Men’s testosterone levels decline about 1 to 2% annually after age 30, according to research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. By their 50s, many men experience irritability, decreased libido, weight gain (hello, belly fat), sleep disruption, and mood changes. Sound familiar?
The Double Standard Problem
Women’s hormonal changes get blamed for everything from workplace “emotions” to relationship friction. Meanwhile, men’s parallel experience gets coded as “getting older,” “stress,” or simply ignored. A 2023 study in Maturitas found that only 12% of men experiencing andropause symptoms sought medical treatment, compared to 65% of women with menopausal symptoms.
We’re missing the plot. These aren’t isolated experiences. They’re synchronized life transitions affecting relationships, careers, and connection.
"Andropause is absolutely real, and it’s unfortunate how little conversation there is about it, both in the media and in doctors’ offices. Just like women feel such relief and vitality when they finally receive the right hormonal support during midlife, men can experience the same transformation. The difference is, there’s still shame and silence around it. Maybe we need a few brave, high-profile men to help normalize the conversation. What I can tell you from clinical experience is this: once we support men hormonally, they feel so much better — and that ripple effect benefits their partners, families, and communities too." - Lisa Brent, ND, Be Well Natural Medicine
What Changes When We Talk About It
My friend and I sat there listing symptoms we’d noticed in our partners: the short fuse, the afternoon exhaustion, the vanishing motivation. But neither man had connected these dots to hormones. Why would they? Nobody’s talking about it.
When I finally addressed my perimenopause (really addressed it), everything shifted. Lower anxiety. Stable moods. Better sleep. Lost the stubborn weight. Got my energy back. The return on investment was extraordinary. Men deserve the same roadmap.
Creating the Conversation
Research from Harvard Medical School shows that testosterone therapy, when appropriately prescribed, can significantly improve quality of life for men with clinically low levels. But we can’t treat what we don’t discuss.
Here’s how we change this:
Normalize it. Talk about it like we talk about menopause: openly, specifically, without shame.
Make it relational. Frame it as “we’re navigating this together” rather than “what’s wrong with you?”
Share resources. Forward articles. Suggest checkups. Be the friend who brings it up.
Demand airtime. Push for workplace wellness programs that include men’s hormonal health.
Support content creators addressing it.
We grow together. We change together. Our hormones shift together. It’s time the conversation caught up with the reality.
Because eating right is a human right, and so is aging with awareness, support, and dignity for everyone.
